Did Dale Carnegie commit suicide?

Update: Looks like he didn’t from this NY Times article.

“Dale Carnegie, whose book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” was one of the world’s most phenomenal bestsellers, died yesterday at his home, 27 Wendover Road, Forest Hills, Queens. He had been ill for some time. He would have been 67 years old on Nov. 24″

I’ve heard this mentioned in some bulletin boards and by word of mouth, but does anyone have a cite to some details about how he died?

  2. Hey, I also wanna know this. i had a great shock when my interviewer told this & I was lost at that time b’coz I am great Fan of Dale but I didn’t knew abt it & how come a motivation teacher can commit sucide. Please, explain….

  3. Being another fan of Dale, even i was shocked when i heard this from one of my colleague. A man who taught people how to live killed himself? I would rather believe that this is just a rumor..
Did a search on web and found this:

NY Times had reported on the day of his death that he had been ill for some time before his death.

Carnegie died in 1955 at the age of 67 from Hodgkin’s disease.

Officially it is said that Carnegie died of Hodgkin’s disease. Now suppose he did commit suicide. I think to report that would be a disservice to anyone would believes in his system. However, if he did consider this.
Mr Carnegie may have been suffering a great deal. His family may have also been sharing in these distress. Although I personally do not believe in the option of suicide as a solution to problems, my opinions are based upon my life experiences.
Suicide is not a cowards way out. Death is the ultimate unknown and most people cling to life under the worst circumstances.
Having wrote this, I think that this is just one of those stories that grow out of someone’s cruelty. The manner of one’s dying is between that person and whatever it is that is the creative force.

  6. My boss told me that Dale Carnegie did not commit suicide. He also mentioned that at the Dale Carnegie Headquarters in New York, there’s some sort of museum and they have his death certificate displayed. So you could always pop in to have a look if you’re in New York!

  7. The most well read book in the world has been Qura’an (Koran), not any other book as NY Times quoted reporting Carnegie’s death (in the link above.)I suggest readers do their own research to verify what I say.

  8. Dr. Farhan, I suspect that the most read book has been the Vedas, which have been transmitted by oral chanting for at least 1700 years before the Koran was even written.

  9. I suggest a proper, netral and objective research that will clearly show that the book most frequently read and recited by mankind has been Qura’an. Consider the number of Muslims in the world, consider that a Muslim is bound to read (from)the Qura,an at least more than thirty times a day (in five times daily prayers), consider that no other book has been learnt by heart by greater number of people who are continuously reciting it than Qura,an, consider (when it comes to printing and publication) that majority of Muslim households keep more than one copies of the Holy book. I insist that readers take a neutral stance and do their own research.

  10. I believe the topic was “How did Dale Carnegie die?”. If you don’t have anything to add with respect to the topic, don’t blog just for the heck of it. So start another topic if you want to debate the most widely read book (Personally I feel its “The Book of Life” – if you think of life as a book )

The original question still remains – “Is there an unofficial version of his death?”

  11. Dale carnigie may have commited suicide well he may have been depresed bc he had nothen to live for dis book how to win friends,,,,is what he did ultimatly just to make him happy meaning he was selfish and his belives were just to make him happy in reality he could not care how you feel but if he can make you happy it would make him happy so he would want that for himself…

  13. Myself being the great fan of Carnigie got into trouble when my friend asked regarding his death. I dint have any answer so i came in google but here i found it is under debate. I really felt very bad n shame of mankind, when death certificate in the musium says death becoz of disease there is no reson to argue..
If anybody in debate without proofs is same as fool.I request everybody to stop debating on this topic..hope u do so.

  14. I don’t believe that he can commit suicide. Instead of going on with this debate why can’t anybody look into the death certificate, so that it can clear the clouds of doubt. I am staying far from New York so it is not possible for me. Is anybody from New york can volunteer?

  15. I don’t believe that dale commit suicide. maybe we just let him be in peace and just always remember what this man made to touch peoples lives.

  16. Dale wasn’t advising how to be a “good person” or anything on virtue, he was just showing how to use people to get them do smth for you. He was a master of eploiting ppl and that’s no real way to reach happiness.

  17. thetalkativeman

impulsive google search and got here 🙂 I am openly telling this site rocks, if ppl not agree means, they are fool :p

  18. The rumor began because another author, Irving Tessler, wrote “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People” as an unauthorized parody of the classic Dale Carnegie book. Mr. Tessler later comitted suicide and was confused with Dale Carnegie himself.

  19. Dale could have very well committed suicide. His methods of dealing with problems was to sweep them under the carpet and focus on the work at hand. Now that works fine upto a certain point but the chaos does not remain under the carpet. It has a very nasty of coming back with a big bang as soon as the mind becomes free.

Las personas mudan…Dale Carnegie estaba depresivo muy depresivo por su enfermedad..su viuda Doroty Carnegie supo esconder muy bien y aprovechar su nombre para crear una empresa internacional , ganado mucho dinero durante años.

  21. friends,

i beg of you who are so concerned about his death /suicide , allow him to stay alive in your and our hearts, please.

    akash

  22. dude, buddy i think u’ve got the man all wrong. The book is not telling u how to manipulate people its tells u how to live with people and their complexities. he’s just telling us what we ‘ve all known about people anyway!! his insights into people’s behaviour was magnificent. and he’sas good a man as you can find.

  23. Well it is hard to tell. But I cannot say that since he is
a good pscychologist, he didn’t commit suicide. As he is
a human being there is a possibility of very bad stress to happen.
But he is in the heart of millions.

  24. Dear friends, I agree that dale carnegie lives in the hearts of
millions of fans and readers. When there is a
death certificate showing illness as the cause of death
there is no point in discussing it further. Let dale rest in peace.

  25. There is no point in wasting your time for an insignificant discussion.
Every human may experience a life threatening stress in his life time.
When you think about commintting suicide, when you feel it, you can realize the joy in it. Joy of madness…………….its like a remedy for all worries, from all surrounding pressures. Freedom from everything. You need to be stronger to commit suicide- The feeling is like a dream…

  26. I too came in search of the reson for his death. All I found here is gibberish and not an iota of fact this way or that. I propose this discussion can be closed so that it saves the time of newcomers who are innocently looking for some answers.

  27. i don’t know, what to say. i feel like crying. i don’t believe he commited suicide. it just can’t be possible at all. his books motivated me al lot. i removed my distress through this. a person like him, it’s even sin to think of him like this way

  28. It sounds Dale has comitted sucide..

  29. i wldnt be the same persob as im with out his book

  30. another anonymous

I wouldn’t be surprised if he did commit suicide. Afterall secular humanism can only provide a person with temporary joy and success. I have heard of a lot of people who have taken the course only to slide back to their old habits again. Of course you won’t have such testimonails on most dale carnegie websites.

I am almost done with the course and my opinion is that it’s like a Jim Jones or applegate cult

  31. I agree with the course being like a cult. I took the course and it was a complete utter waste of time. The people in the course were so delusional that it made me sick.

    Being a Christian,

  32. Being a Christian, I think the human relationship principles taught in the course can be summed up in the Bible as the golden rule.I didn’t need a course to tell me what I already know. I took the course against my will because it was part of my course requirements otherwise I would’ve never taken it because it is humanisim.

So yes I can believe he commited suicide.

  33. Friends:

    01. There are millions of fans and persons that were benefitted by his book. I can proudly say that I am one among them.

    02. Taking a re-look, it is well said that Mr.Dale did not tell how to solve the problems. He talked about how to manage/manipulate and learn to live with the problem. Often it could even lead to pushing the problem under the carpet.

    03. Despite any amount of arguements for and against the cause of his death, the fact remains that there would be thousands and thousands of people that might have benefited from his works. That way Mr.Dale lives in the hearts of millions for many more generations through.

    04. Itlooks unbelievable that Mr.Dale committed suicide. However, his commiting suicide is a fact, let us accepte it. There is no need to attempt towards glorification of Mr.Dale by rejecting the fact, if at all he committed suicide.

    05. An arguement that Mr.Dale did not teach how to serve the humanity has no place for discussion. At no point of time Mr.Dale talked about it. His entire focus was on the individual, and he has talked about why and how one has to live and learn living with the realities. In the process, it is possible that one may lose focus on the society and can be entangled in his own personal development of materialistic benefits. Quite possible. For that we can not make Mr.Dale responsible.

    Thanks.

  34. Well…I was going to say it’s funny how people don’t necessarily see the facts through their emotions.

I would tend to believe the death certificate.

However in searching for an author named Irving Tessler, a search on Amazon came up with nothing.
